Happy Tuesday Fit Soldiers!  This past week I started getting a lot of emails on the Acai berry!  Come to find out my facebook was hacked and one of the spams that was sent out was about this magical berry, go figure.  So what is it all about?  I decided to see out our resident nutritionist for her professional answer.  Here is a guest blog post by Nutritionist, Sarah Morgan!

Berry Interesting: the acai story

By Sarah N. Morgan, Nutritionist

Recently a friend of mine sent me an article about the acai (ah-SIGH-ee) berry and wanted to get my opinion. The article appeared to be from Consumer Reports, a trusted and reputable company. The story started out by explaining all of the hype over the acai berry and how this employee of Consumer Reports decided to “experiment” on herself. First red flag. A true experiment requires many subjects and a control group, none of which she had.

She proceeds to explain how she picked the “best acai product” on the market with its name and a link to the product. Second red flag. Several products should have been examined in a true experiment on the acai berry.  She tracks her progress over 4 weeks and ends up losing more than 20 pounds and has unending energy. All of her doubts about the acai berry are distilled. She recommends everyone trying the free trial, of course paired with the same company’s colon cleanse.

Sounds too good to be true? Well it is. If you continue to scroll down the page you will find a disclaimer at the bottom stating the article has no affiliation with Consumer Reports. It’s an “article” by the company trying to sell their acai product. They offer a free trial, only $0.99 for shipping. Pair that with a colon cleanse and you are set to go. I did a little more looking into the company and it turns out that many people had posted warnings about this scam. People stated that they would buy the product only later to get charged over $70 on their credit card. And if you forget to cancel your “2 week free trial” then you end up getting charged a whopping $168!

And I wonder why she lost all that weight? Well if you are taking a product that has stimulates, yes they add things like caffeine into the pills, your appetite will be suppressed. You add to that a colon cleanse, which basically means you will poop more. I wonder what will happen. Of course you will lose weight. Water weight mostly. And maybe a little fat. But this is not a way to live.

So what about the acai berry itself? Is it a superfood? I have found many people confused and lead astray by this topic. So let’s take a look at the berry itself.

Meet Acai

The Acai (ah-SIGH-ee) berries are produced by a palm tree that grows in Central and South America. The berry is roughly the size of a large blueberry, surrounded by an edible pulp and containing a large seed. Unfortunately you cannot buy the whole fresh berries in store. The berries must be turned into a juice or dried to preserve their antioxidant capacity.

Most studies on the Acai berry have focused on the fruits antioxidant composition. Antioxidants reduce free radical damage and thus can help protect the body against damage and disease. Anthrocyanins and flavanoids are powerful antioxidants found in acai berries. Anthrocyanins are responsible for the red, blue and purple hues in many fruits and vegetables. Blueberries, red grapes, red wine and acai are rich in anthrocyanins. Some research has suggested anthrocyanins important role in killing cancer cells.

Research and nutritional analysis on the acai berry is still in an infancy stage. Some research has suggested that the acai berries contain a large dose of antioxidants, larger than any of the other berries (cranberries, blueberries, raspberries). This is a wonderful thing and we know that diets rich in antioxidants are helpful to prevent diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. But what about all the health claims of the acai berry?

Berry Marketing

Businesses exist to make a profit. They are looking for the best possible way to bring money into the company. The food and supplement industry is extremely competitive. Companies must find a way to stand out. The way they do this is through their marketing. Make the products sound good. Make it irresistible to the consumer. Make them need it.

Well I know from experience that most Americans want to lose weight and have health issues they are tired of dealing with. So a supplement or product comes out that promises to help you lose 20 pounds and get rid of your arthritis and lower your cholesterol in one month. Sounds great right?

But the problem is that these claims are based on a marketing strategy more than a concern for your health. Bummer I know. And companies are not always the most honest in their marketing. For instance, most acai berry products promise to boost your energy and mood. Well that’s great, but the reason you will be zipping around at mach 10 is not because of the little berry, but because of the mega doses of caffeine they pump into the pill. You could get the same “boost” from drinking a few shots of espresso or drinking a Red Bull.

My point in all of this is not to bring doom and gloom. But as a consumer you need to think for yourself. Something I always try to tell my clients is to ask themselves is, “How is this person or company benefiting from what I buy?” This helps us as consumers evaluate the motivation behind a sale.

The Acai Bottom Line

So are the berries and juices good for you? Maybe. The first thing you need to do is look to see what the actual ingredients of the juice or supplement are. If the product is loaded with caffeine I would not recommend it. If the product has as much sugar as a soda, not a good idea. And if the product is going to cost you half of your grocery money for the month, probably not worth it.

The acai berry itself is a great food. Just like blueberries or red peppers are great foods. They are all high in antioxidants. But when it comes to overall health, no one food alone covers all of our needs. Nor will a berry reverse every health problem or disease known to man. The acai berry has, unfortunately, found itself in the midst of a marketing frenzy. It is a great berry that is being used.

I hear it all day long.  It usually starts with something like this.  “Yea… I really want to…”  “I need to do something…” or I’m trying to get down there but…”  And always ends with this.  “…I just don’t have enough time, my schedule is really busy.”   Now I understand we lead busy lives, we have families, jobs, meetings, TV shows to watch… happy hour…  Now some more valid than others but at the end of the day they are all excuses.

I heard this said yesterday from a podcast on the keeping the Sabbath Holy and it sparked some fire under me in more ways than one.  “Your schedule will NEVER adjust to you.” — Aaron Stern, www.themillonline.org.  This can be applied to a plethora of things may it be spiritually, family, tasks at work, and YOU.  When are you going to stop letting your schedule control you and take control of your schedule.  Where are your priorities?  Is your health even one of them?

Take a look at your schedule.  do you have a schedule, I’m not saying you need one but chances are there is more room in there than you think.  Now if you don’t fill that free time with something constructive.  That free time will fill itself with mindless time wasting things like facebook, farmville, TV, junk chain emails.  Time to start telling your time what to do and set you priorities strait.  Your fake farm, and imaginary mafia, and reality TV shows have nothing to do with real life and everything to do with wasting life.

Hey Fit Soldiers.

We all have dreams and goals in life, it can be anything, anything at all, heath, career, family, retirement you name it you should have goals.  There is just one problem…if those dreams and goals are anything worth achieving they should not be easy.

I see a major problem prevents us from reaching our dreams and goals, it is too easy to be comfortable.  If your sitting on your couch chances are your not challenging your body to get healthier, challenging your brain to get smarter, or challenging your family to become more unified.  Since I am a health and fitness professional and not a life coach lets stick with the body.  Once we are comfortable with our body do we stop all together and say “WooHoo I made it!!”   Do we put in a little effort to maintain what you worked so hard for?  Many people have come a long way to reach their fitness goal.  Even more people in America still have a longer way to go to reach their fitness goal and its frustrating.  Down right frustrating to think “I have to lose 50 pounds.  That could take a year.”

The point is yes fitness goals require lots of hard work and may take a long time until your back to where you want to be.  But lets flip this.  Lets look at how you got to your current state.  So hypotheticaly we have 50lbs to lose.  Were you born 50lbs over weight?  Maybe the fat stage in middle school was when you gained 50 extra pound (not uncommon in the youth of today.)  Maybe that freshman 15 was actually freshman 50…  No, were going to be realistic.  It did not come on overnight.  You did not gain unwanted pounds from being out of your fitness comfort zone.  So why do we expect it to come off over night?  It is not going to.  There is no magic pill or potion, no super syrup or solution that is going to get you to lose weight and keep it off.   So STOP going to those stupid weight loss centers, or turning to the magic diets.  Take a nice long look at hard work, dedication, and determination.  Get pissed off at the way you are, and excited about the way you want to be and start to make it happen.  I will end with this quote.

“As long as the bar is set high and distant there is no way but the hard way.  How could there be any other way?”

Current Boot Campers are welcome we just ask you do your best to bring someone new!

Is Cardio Strength Training for you?  Yes,  I absolutely believe every fitness level, every newbie, every athlete, every goal can and will benefit form this type of training, yes even your muscle professional body builders because I know one that only trains this way.  There is a time and place for everything though.  An endurance athlete such as a marathoner will CST one to two times max per week.  A newbie may need to ease into it.  Weight loss three times per week.  Different exercise prescriptions and frequency for different goals.  Are most people going to do that intense of a workout described last week?  Probably not.  Will they be able to work up to that as their goals progress?

So the facts are there.  I hope you can see the difference between the old school lifting, long boring cardio to get into your “fat burn zone” type of training, and the cardio strength training.  That its not necessarily the amount of time put into your workout, but rather the amount of effort put into your workouts.  Get out of your comfort zone.  When you think you cant push any harder, push harder you may surprise yourself!   No more excuses, see you tomorrow!

“…so I need to get into my ‘fat burning zone’ in order to lose the weight I want to lose.”

FALSE.  Tremlay et al 1994.

Group A completed 20-weeks of endurance (steady-state) exercise.  Group B 15-weeks of interval style training.  In the end group A burned 28, 661 calories.  Group B burned a total of 16,614 calories.  Yes steady-state burned twice as many calories as the interval training. So what happen?

The researchers adjusted for the difference in the energy cost of training and found the interval groups lost 900 percent more subcutaneous fat than the endurance group.  That’s nine times more fat lost!

One more time…steady-state burned twice as many calories as the interval training…interval group lost 900 percent more subcutaneous fat than the endurance group.  That’s nine times more fat lost!

Yes aerobic fitness is very important.  As we said last week you are telling your heart and lungs that they need to get better, stronger, and more efficient at taking O2 and delivering nutrients and removing waste from your body.   Now yesterday we talked about how time is the #1 reason not to exercise.  Lets see what we can do with this issue.

In 2006 a 6-week landmark study done by Tabata et al, compares aerobic and anaerobic capacity changes.  The groups again are continuous steady-state exercise versus high-intensity exercise.  The protocol here is 20 seconds of high-intensity work with 10-seconds rest.  Compared to 60-minute session on a spin-style bike.   First lets look at the training times.  The steady-state group totaled 300 minutes per week and the interval group just 20 minutes per week.  There is your time excuse eliminated.

The results:  Steady-state showed no anaerobic gains, and 10% improvement in aerobic capacity.

The Interval group (training 20 minutes per week) showed a 28% improvement in anaerobic capacity, and a 14% improvement in aerobic capacity!

Yes they saw larger gains in aerobic capacity than the type of exercise fitness magazines and gyms lead you to believe is the ultimate in aerobic health.

Sorry I missed this ment to wrap up the Cardio vs Strength battle…

Even though CT may have won the gym battle, ST will even things out over the next few days.  Both aspects are important and neither should be forgotten or left behind.  CT is important because you are telling your heart and lungs to get better at doing their job.  Take in O2 through your lungs, it enters your blood stream then your heart pumps it around to your muscles(O2 mandatory for fat burn), and also remove waste your muscle produce from working.

Strength Training’s role is to tell your body to keep your muscle, and get stronger and leaner.  Your muscle now becomes your metabolism.  By keeping and building lean mass you will essentially be increasing your metabolism.  Your body uses more energy to maintain your muscle mass than that of fat.  Now that doesn’t mean by a doing strength program you are going to become a body builder figure.  It takes a lot of work and supplements to get to that point.  But you NEED muscle to have a solid metabolism.

So in order for ST and CT to reap the benefits of each other they will then need to trade places and do more work.  The time spent in the gym then is increased to up to 2 hour or more…  Who has 2 hours and at that there may still be a better way to gain an increased benefits.

I am talking about Cardio Strength Training.  Yes CST that freak that came in half way through this battle.  Was his workout short? YES.  Hard? YES. Can everyone do pullups, box jumps etc?  NO.  Are there modifications and progressions for everything? ABSOLUTELY.

The rest of this week I will be highlighting some scientific studies that show the benefits of Cardio Strength Training.  The results may shock you.  Get you mad.  Feeling mislead.  You may get to a point of personal confrontation.  After all “If there is no personal confrontation, there is no progress.”  Stay posted your results depend on it.

So do you need to do 30-60 minutes of cardio and 30-60 minutes of strength to be well rounded?  Find out tomorrow…

TIME   Yes, whether you don’t have it or its a flat out excuse time is the reason why people have the body they never wanted.  So you guessed it.  Today’s study is on time.  This one comes from Martin Gaibala, PhD, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Canada. Again looking at steady-state versus  high-intensity intervals.

Group A:  Performed four to six 30-second interval sprints on a spin cycle, in between they rested four minutes.  Group B:  Performed 90-120 minutes of continuous cycling.

Results…No difference in exercise performance between the two groups.   No difference?  Lets look at the commitment levels of these workouts.  Group A exercised for 2.5 hours.  Group B exercised for 10.5 hours.

Now that time thing is all an excuse.  The interval group in between rests actually only did 2-3 minutes of hard work and saw equal results as group B putting in hours of work.
